Planting Tips

HOW TO PLANT MANGO SEEDLINGS

  • Spacing of between 8m2 -12mor 10m*10m(dry zones) or 5m*3m or 5m*2.5 or 3m*2.5m(where high density planting is required)
  • Depth of hole 1m×1m1×1m (in shallow & hilly soils) or 0.5m×0.5m×0.5m (in loamy & deep soils)
  • Put the soil aside when digging the hole.
  • Mix to soil with 1 debe of manure
  • Return the mixture to the hole filling to about 2/3(two thirds) of the hole
  • Cut the polythene sleeve carefully so that the plant can be planted with the entire ball of the soil
  • Place each of the seedling at the centre of the planting hole.
  • Cover the seedling at exactly the same depth as it was in the polythene leaving it about six inches below the soil surface.
  • Once the trees are established (about 3-6 months), start applying nitrogenous fertilizers.

N/B-Nitrogenous fertilizers should be applied in splits to avoid leeching out

-The seedlings should not be allowed to dry hence the need for frequent watering

-Does well in warm climate and tolerates high temperatures.

-They require dry weather when the fruits are maturing

  • Return the mixture to the hole, filling to about two thirds of the hole size
  • Cut the polythene sleeve carefully so that the seedling can be planted with the entire ball of the soil
  • Place each of the seedling per hole at the centre of the planting hole
  • Cover the seedling at exactly the same depth as it was in the polythene sleeves leaving about 6 inches below the soil surface
  • The seedling should not be left to dry hence the need for frequent watering and/or mulching.
  • Once the seedlings are established, i.e. 3-6months old, start applying fertilizer

  • Spacing 2m×2.5m (less fertile soil) or 5m×3m(very fertile soil)
  • Depth of planting hole is 40cm×40cm×40cm
  • Put the top soil aside when digging the hole
  • Mix top soil with ½ debe manure per hole
  • Return the mixture to the hole, filling to about two thirds of the hole size
  • Cut the polythene sleeve carefully so that the seedling can be planted with the entire ball of the soil
  • Place each of the seedling per hole at the centre of the planting hole
  • Cover the seedling at exactly the same depth as it was in the polythene sleeves leaving about 6 inches below the soil surface
  • Requires 1000-1500mm/year of water which should be evenly distributed otherwise irrigate but do not over irrigate because passion fruit cannot stand water-logging
